Cooling tower is a device(structure)designed to dissipate heat from a production line or a heat source using the evaporation fundamental.
The cooling tower output temperature depends on the wet bulb. The Wet bulb depends on humidity and dry bulb temperature(Psychrometric chart).
The wet bulb temperature is always less than the temperature we can feel. So we use cooling towers to reach temperatures lower than environmental temp.
This is the big difference between cooling towers and air-cooled heat exchangers which can not chill the fluid less than dry bulb in theory(in reality, air-cooled heat exchangers output temperature is always more than the dry bulb + 5-degree centigrade)
Cooling towers are usually much cheaper than air-cooled heat exchangers and that is another advantage. But you must consider that cooling towers consume water for evaporation, so they are not a perfect choice for locations and cities which suffer water shortages or very humid environments.
So if you want to buy and install a cooling system, it will be wise to check every aspect and find an economic and environmentally friendly solution.
